The Yoga Suite - Center for Yoga Studies – On stage at 29th Annual
Hamtramck Labor Day Festival 2009

Hamtramck, MI (August 24, 2009) The Yoga Suite Center for Yoga Studies (YSCYS) grand opening events continue center stage, Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the 29th Annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival.

Starting the event will be a yoga presentation featuring Hamtramck Public Schools Elementary school students, followed by demonstrations from seasoned yoga students, ending with a mini yoga class taught by YSCYS Director, Michele Pearson.  Prize giveaways for participants and discounts for Iyengar Fall Session 2009 are among the offerings at the event.  Plus local Iyengar yoga teachers will be on hand to offer expert advice and give free consultations.

The festival marks the finale of a list of summer long grand opening events of the first Iyengar Yoga dedicated school in the Metro-Detroit Area.  A small town in Michigan served as host to living yoga master, B.K.S. Iyengar during one of his first visits to the United States nearly 35 years ago.  That visit played a major role in Iyengar Yoga’s widespread popularity.  Voted Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People in the World, B.K.S. Iyengar’s method of yoga is one of the most widely taught in the US.

“Even with its popularity it is difficult to find certified Iyengar Yoga teachers in the Metro-Detroit area,” says Michele L. Pearson, owner and Director of YSCYS.  “I travel to Ann Arbor weekly for training from Senior Level certified teachers.” Pearson hopes to be a catalyst in saturating the area with more Iyengar Yoga seekers and teachers. “People are searching for Iyengar Yoga, but can’t find studios in the area.”

Yoga as a physical discipline continues to fascinate Westerners as they discover various ways to morph and mutate the art form.  It’s refreshing, however, to find a school devoted to the preservation of the art, science and philosophy of the subject. YSCYS is a school dedicated to teaching the subject in accord with the 3000 year old Indian tradition, as set forth in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

Although physical discipline is important, Pearson says there is so much more.  “Nothing compares to the refreshing transformation which takes place in the mind.  As confidence and focus is established, stress melts away.”

While it’s good to see health and wellness centers helping individuals relieve stress, it’s even better to stumble upon an unexpected haven in the middle of an urban area.  Located in the small enclave of Hamtramck’s urban business district, YSCYS provides a comfortable environment for a stressed community.  Hard times are affecting individuals from all walks of life, but often urban areas are unable to offer any options for its community to deal with their stress.

“I opened in Hamtramck because I recognize a need within the community.  Everyone needs options when it comes to their well being. We offer packages and incentives to help those who need to manage during this economic upheaval.”

Iyengar Yoga has a profound effect on the body and mind, due to the timings and sequencing of the asanas (postures).  The innovative use of the props, created by Mr. Iyengar, such as blocks, straps, and blankets allows each individual to customize their practice based on their physical needs, resulting in proper spinal alignment and reduced injury.

YSCYS can be found on the South Stage at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 6th at the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival. YSCYS Fall Session begins September 14th, (90) minute sessions are offered throughout the week.   Advanced registration required.  YSCYS is a well-equipped yoga school, all props are provided.  For more information call YSCYS at 313.820.9579 or visit online at www.theyogasuite.com.  Pearson has practiced Iyengar Yoga for over 10 years and has been teaching for 4 years, she also teaches classes at the War Memorial in Grosse Pointe, MI and for the H.O.P.E. program - Hamtramck Schools.
